RP1-Trade & Wealth Distribution

Objectives - Impact:

Main aim of this research pillar is to examine how the European Common Currency has intra-EU Trade and how it has contributed to trade creation or trade diversion depending on a country’s economy characteristics and competitive advantage. Moreover, it will be examined in which respect and extent the Euro has affected or not the creation of trade surpluses or deficits in member-countries. Finally, it will be contemplated how the common FX exchange rate has affected EMU countries, given that they have certain structural economic differences.

Sub-Activities/Topics Covered:

a) EMU and Intra-EU Trade: trade creation & trade diversion

b) EMU and Inter-EU Trade: how common FX has affected certain EMU member-sates external trade and to which extent.

c) EMU and Trade Surpluses/Trade Deficits: wealth distribution.

Benefits for Participants & Linkage to LLP Goals:

1) Dissemination of specialized knowledge to Civil Society and furnishing its members with understanding of the significance of the European Integration project, thus enhancing the sense of European identity,

2) Enhancing education at all levels (academic, intermediaries, civil society) thus serving the objectives of Europe 2020 regarding incentives for increasing third level education,

3) Promoting academic research of high calibre and the involvement of young researchers and distinguished academics, thus facilitating the goal of a European Research Area.

Impact on the Field of Research
: to determine the trade effect of the EMU, to reinvigorate academic research and to stimulate public debate and awareness on the impact of EMU on trade and wealth creation and/or distribution.
